Plot summary
In the mid-nineteenth century, a coal mining town in northern France works the Le Voreux pit. Étienne Lantier, an engineer who has lost his last job for hitting his former boss, arrives looking for work. The miners, worn out and poorly paid, ignore him until Maheu, a father of eight with children of his own underground, takes him onto his team. Catherine, Maheu's daughter, works beside her father and takes an interest in Étienne. He lodges with the family when their eldest son marries and the household needs his rent money. Philippe Hennebeau, the mine's director, has cut the price paid for each cart of coal. Étienne debates Rasseneur, a socialist, and Souvarine, an anarchist, about conditions in the pit, then urges the miners to strike, and Maheu leads them out.
