Plot summary
At a boxing match in 1999, an aging gangster hears that Freddie Mays is about to leave prison after thirty years. That news sends him back to 1968, when he is a young hood who catches the eye of Freddie Mays, an influential London gangster, and is taken on as an enforcer. He wants to please, and his violence impresses his new boss. From the first he is fixated on Mays' success and glamorous life, on his clothes and his flat, and on Karen, Mays' fiancée. Mays has a rival in Lennie Taylor, and the young man wants Mays' place for himself.

- Louis Mellis, David Scinto and Jonathan Glazer all left the production of Gangster No. 1 after disagreeing with the producer over casting. Malcolm McDowell's older Gangster was originally going to be played by Peter Bowles, who had played the role on stage.
- Director Paul McGuigan could not shoot one of the possible endings for the film because a writer had left production and, as McGuigan put it, had taken the ending with him.
