Plot summary
An art dealer named Nina books a masseur to come to her house every week. This time the man who arrives is not Douglas, whom she knows, but a stranger called Fitch, sent in his place. Fitch works through the session and describes the methods he uses, among them techniques he attributes to Hopi medicine men. Talk turns to the relationships each of them has left behind, and the two disagree about temperament and habits as easily as they agree. Fitch keeps pushing questions at a skeptical Nina. Both recall earlier loves and earlier lives as the appointment goes on.
