Plot summary
June 1980 finds Beth Easton newly arrived in Wheaton, Washington, where she and her widowed mother, Kate, have moved into the farmhouse of Kate's late aunt. Beth misses Los Angeles and has no friends in the small town until she meets Jody Salerno, a free-spirited teenager the other girls warn her against. The two slip off into the woods together, and Jody describes an adventure she has planned for the summer solstice. Jody also tells the story of Molly Morgan, a woman miner said to have died in Bear Mountain while searching for gold. Kate urges Beth to spend time with two local girls, Tracy and Samantha. Jody keeps a map of the mountain's caves and a makeshift camp inside the cavern entrance.
