Plot summary
Jason works in advertising and Julie advises charitable investments; the two are longtime best friends, both in their mid-thirties, living in the same Manhattan building. Neither has romantic feelings for the other, and both spend time with two childless married couples, Alex and Leslie and Ben and Missy. Over the next four years both couples have children and their marriages suffer. After a raucous birthday celebration for Jason at the Brooklyn home of Alex and Leslie, he and Julie talk about having a child first and looking for a partner after, since time is running out. They agree to have a baby together, share the raising of the child and keep dating other people, a plan their friends predict will end badly.

- Jennifer Westfeldt and Jon Hamm got the idea after watching friends start families and 'all but disappearing from their lives'. Cast member Adam Scott owned up to being one of them, saying he and his wife had become "the worst friends to Jen and Jon because we were so busy".
- Jon Hamm was always going to be in the film but deliberately not paired on screen with his real-life partner, and the whole production had to be squeezed into the few months between his fourth and fifth seasons of Mad Men.
