Plot summary
Jamie Rellis works as a headhunter in New York City, and Dylan Harper is an art director in Los Angeles. Each has just ended a relationship and sworn off emotional entanglements. Jamie recruits Dylan for a position at GQ, and though he is unsure at first, a night out in the city with her changes his mind. He signs a one-year contract, moves to New York, and the two become close friends. Since neither wants a romance, they agree that sex between them can happen without attachment, and they keep the friendship otherwise as it was. Jamie, meanwhile, decides to start dating other men.

- Paramount Pictures dropped its original protest against the title only after its own director, Ivan Reitman, re-titled his film No Strings Attached; at the same time NBC was developing a sitcom with the same title.
- Stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis spent more than a month workshopping the script with Gluck before shooting began, with the three of them rewriting lines together and each defending their character's point of view.
- The trailer was released on YouTube and attracted over a million views in 48 hours, becoming the second most-watched video of the day and the most-viewed video in the film category.
