Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Kirra Grisby leaves her Australian home for Cape Town to spend the summer with her grandfather Gus at his rundown seaside amusement park while her father is hospitalized. Mansa, one of Gus' employees, meets her at the airport, and she befriends Sifiso, a Xhosa boy. A storm then separates a male orca calf from his pod, and the animal is left in the lagoon beside the park. Kirra finds him, names him Willy, and the calf draws crowds of visitors. Gus' rival, Rolf Woods, offers half a million dollars for the calf. Kirra wants him returned to the sea, but she is told his under-developed echolocation leaves him unable to survive without his pod.
