Plot summary
The body of fisherman John Crankton is found destroyed in the Louisiana swamp, and medical examiner Sam Rivers is sent to investigate. He brings along Mary Callahan, a biologist, to the bayou where John lived. Sam grew up in the area and is comfortable there, while Mary is not. Upriver at the fishing community they meet John's widow Gloria and their daughter Eliza, who has come with her boyfriend Dan to help Gloria move. Gloria says a strange boat washed up after a hurricane three months earlier and that odd things have followed. Sam and Mary search a large fishing boat moored along a canal and find the crew's remains inside. Their visit triggers a signal aboard the vessel, and a wealthy hunter named Jeff and his crew learn of it.
