Plot summary
Frances Halladay, from Sacramento, California, is 27 and an apprentice at a modern dance company in New York, waiting for an opening in its permanent corps de ballet. Sophie, her best friend from Vassar, works in publishing. The two consider themselves like an old married couple who do not have sex with each other. Sophie then says she will move to Tribeca, joining a different and wealthier friend there, and Frances, who has just broken up with her boyfriend, cannot lean on her parents to cover the rent in an expensive city. She takes a spare room in Chinatown from Lev and Benji, two creative friends whose families help pay their way.

- Even though Frances Ha had the budget for and access to professional cinema cameras and lenses, the filmmakers shot it on a consumer-grade Canon EOS 5D Mark II stills camera with Canon L-series still-photography lenses, mostly a 50mm prime and a 70-200mm zoom.
- Noah Baumbach shot Frances Ha digitally and in black-and-white with his cinematographer Sam Levy, partly to emulate Woody Allen's collaborations with cinematographer Gordon Willis on films such as Manhattan.
- David Bowie's "Modern Love" scores a Frances Ha scene that remakes the sequence in Leos Carax's Mauvais Sang where Denis Lavant runs through the streets.
- Greta Gerwig co-wrote Frances Ha with Noah Baumbach but did not anticipate starring in it as well; Baumbach thought she suited the part.
