Biography

Dean Wareham is an American musician and actor who helped start the band Galaxie 500 in 1987 with drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, he grew up in Sydney and New York City, and he studied at Harvard University. He left Galaxie 500 in 1991 and formed Luna, whose albums included Bewitched (1994), Penthouse (1995), and Romantica (2002). Rolling Stone named Penthouse one of the essential albums of the 1990s. After Luna broke up in 2005, he began recording with Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta and wrote music for Noah Baumbach's film Mistress America (2015) and for The Squid and the Whale (2005). Wareham also made solo records, including the EP Emancipated Hearts, a self-titled album, and I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A., and in 2008 he published the memoir Black Postcards.
