Plot summary
Ray Monroe, his wife Joanne and their daughter Peri are on the road home from a Thanksgiving visit to Joanne's parents when they pull into a gas station so Peri can use the restroom. Searching the back seat for Peri's compact mirror, Ray looks away as a stray dog corners the girl; she backs toward an exposed pit and falls. Ray jumps in after her and strikes his head. He carries Peri to a hospital they passed, where a doctor finds her arm broken and orders a scan in case of a head injury. Joanne goes down to the basement scanning room with Peri, and Ray, tired, falls asleep in a chair. He wakes hours later and asks to see them; the staff say no one of those names was ever checked in.
