Plot summary
Danilo Prozor is born in Yugoslavia and comes to the United States at twelve, settling with his working-class parents in Chicago. In 1961 he is finishing high school. David, one of his friends, expects to work as a mortician like his father, and Georgia, who is free-spirited, wants to become a famous dancer. Danilo hopes to go to college, but his father wants him to take a job and calls the ambition arrogant. All three boys are drawn to Georgia, who grows more flirtatious with them. She asks Danilo to sleep with her, and his nervous refusal leaves her deeply upset. Danilo leaves Chicago for college, where he shares a room with Louie Carnahan, whose disability and declining health leave him hoping to live until men land on the moon.
