Plot summary
Paris, 1942, under German occupation. Marcel Martin, an unemployed taxi driver, supports himself by delivering parcels after curfew for the black market. On this night he is to carry four suitcases of pork meat on foot across the capital. In the basement of the grocer Jambier he plays the accordion to cover the noise of the slaughter, then goes with his wife Mariette to a restaurant to meet the accomplice who is to help him. The man has been arrested. A stranger at the restaurant, Grandgil, shares his table after a misunderstanding, and Martin asks him to take the missing man's place. Grandgil agrees only for a much larger sum, and presses the frightened Jambier for it.
