Plot summary
Peter Bretter composes music for the television series Crime Scene, and Sarah Marshall, its star, has been his girlfriend for five years. She ends it, and his stepbrother Brian Bretter urges him to take a vacation and put her out of his mind. Peter picks the Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii, a spot Sarah used to mention. She is staying there as well, with Aldous Snow, the lead singer of Infant Sorrow. Rachel Jansen, who works at the hotel, gives Peter a complimentary suite. Awkward encounters with Sarah and Aldous keep happening around the resort. Peter and Rachel start spending time together, and he confides that he dislikes his television work and dreams of writing a Dracula puppet rock opera.

- Mila Kunis was hurt filming a jet ski scene when the handlebar ripped a piece of her neck off, leaving a permanent scar. Directors Zach Cregger and Trevor Moore credit an awkward discussion about that injury as the reason she was not cast in their 2009 comedy Miss March.
- Jason Segel thought it would be funny not to tell his parents about his full frontal nudity scene before the premiere. His mother did not appreciate the joke and had to step out of the theater, and she later emailed the family to warn them about the nudity.
