Plot summary

Don Baker, blind since birth, grew up in Hillsborough outside San Francisco, where his mother Florence raised him and wrote children's books about a young blind superhero named Donnie Dark. At twenty he takes an apartment in the city on a two-month trial: Florence is not to visit him during that time. A month in, Linda Fletcher, the girlfriend who first gave him confidence, is no longer in his life. Jill Tanner, nineteen, moves in next door. She overhears Don arguing with his mother through the thin walls and introduces herself. Jill, married for six days at sixteen, avoids commitment. Don, who says he has shadow vision that lets him sense obstacles, exchanges details of his past with her, and the two unlock the door between their apartments.
