Plot summary
Late in 1968, Manhattan advertising executive Kelly Jones receives a high-stakes offer from Moe Berkus, a covert government operative serving President-elect Richard Nixon. He wants NASA's public image revived, and he pressures Kelly with the threat of exposing her deceptive past. She reluctantly accepts and relocates to Cocoa Beach, Florida, accompanied by her assistant, Ruby. At the Kennedy Space Center, she meets Cole Davis, the principled launch director preparing Apollo 11, and the two immediately clash over her methods, which include corporate sponsorships and bringing in actors to play scientists. Kelly suggests televising the moon landing with a camera on the Lunar Excursion Module, which Cole dismisses as impractical. Moe secretly endorses the idea and gives her another directive: a fake moon landing, codenamed Artemis, to be staged should the real mission fail.
