Plot summary
John Boyz lives alone in Venice, without a job and without direction, in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. He cannot sleep, and he spends his nights watching the neighborhood through binoculars. In a journal he records the smallest details of his days, and he plays homemade videos of the riots over and over, looking for a clue. The IRS puts a freeze on his bank account and his unemployment benefits end. His girlfriend is unfaithful, and his brother Jimmy, addicted to drugs, needs $3,000 to get into a detox program. He also has encounters, some of them imagined, with people from television, relatives who have died, a one-time liberal who now works in investment banking, drug users, and the unemployment office.
