Plot summary
In 1994, a bookstore employee, Heather, is stabbed at the Shadyside Mall by her friend Ryan Torres, who kills six other mall employees before Sheriff Nick Goode shoots him. Reporters dub Shadyside the country's murder capital, while neighboring Sunnyvale is one of its richest and safest towns. Shadyside's teenagers blame the witch Sarah Fier, executed for witchcraft in 1666. Deena Johnson, who does not believe in the witch, has just broken up with Sam, who moved to Sunnyvale. Her brother Josh researches the town's history, and their friends Simon and Kate sell drugs, hoping to leave. At a Sunnyvale vigil, a brawl breaks out between the two towns' students, and a car crash on the way home leaves Sam seeing a vision of Sarah Fier.
