Plot summary
Deena joins Sarah Fier's severed hand back to her corpse, and a vision places her inside Sarah's life in 1666. Sarah lives in Union with George Fier, her father, and Henry Fier, her younger brother, before the settlement splits into Shadyside and Sunnyvale. She and her friends Hannah Miller and Lizzie visit a reclusive widow to gather berries for a party, and Sarah comes upon a book of black magic. At the party, Caleb harasses Sarah and Hannah; the two slip away and kiss while an unknown figure watches. Pastor Cyrus Miller begins behaving oddly the next day, and the town's food and water turn bad. Sarah tells Solomon Goode about Hannah and wonders whether she has brought the town its misfortune.
