Plot summary
A shaman declares at Saiva's birth that she will harm anyone she grows close to, and her reindeer-herding tribe casts her out. She survives as a nomad in the subarctic, raising a girl named Anja as her own. When soldiers come to clear the tundra, Saiva takes Anja far north, past abandoned telephone wire trees, to a beach she believes is beyond anyone's reach, and the two pitch their yurt. Hunting alone one day, Saiva spots a man in the ice, nearly dead from cold and hunger. She searches him for what he carries, but he wakes and begs for help, so she hauls him to their yurt and tends his wounds. He gives the name Loki and says he ran from soldiers who will shoot him on sight.
