Plot summary
In 1969, with the Vietnam War under way, two young fathers go off to serve: Stephen George, a man of strong faith, and Edward Adams, a doubter. In 1997, Stephen's son John Paul George, a California postal worker three weeks from marrying Cynthia, finds a box of his father's war possessions in the garage of his late mother's house. A letter in the box names Edward Adams as Stephen's closest friend in Vietnam. John goes to Mississippi and looks for Edward's son Wayne, a bad-tempered recluse who first sends him away and then lets him in for dinner. Wayne says his own father came back to his Christian faith through Stephen, and invites John to travel with him to the memorial in Washington where their fathers' names appear.
