Plot summary
Emma Evans is a fifteen-year-old who is secluded and taught at home, and her behavior has grown uncontrolled enough that she believes the Devil is inside her. She wants a life free of the family ties and responsibilities that hold her back, and she feels her parents do not understand her. Then the frightening fits begin. Her parents are convinced that her trouble is medical or psychological, but the doctors' tests draw no conclusions, and the family is left without an answer.
