Plot summary
In 1989, the Smart family lives in Akron, Ohio, where Macy Smart and Buddy Smart stage live theater with their sons Derrick and Lester. Lester is an outcast at his middle school who favors classy outfits; he pictures talks with late drama legends such as Noël Coward and interrupts performances, which frustrates the stage manager. Buddy wants to manage two theaters, with Milwaukee and larger cities ahead. At dinner he shares the plan and asks the family to vote. Derrick, a football player, objects because he does not want to leave his girlfriend Annabeth or his place on the team. The others agree, Lester most of all, since he hopes for a career in New York theater.
