Plot summary
Jamie New attends Mayfield School in Sheffield and lives with his mother, Margaret. When his teacher Miss Hedge ridicules the class for their unrealistic career plans, Jamie stays quiet about his own ambition: he wants to perform as a drag queen. His best friend Pritti Pasha backs him, while classmate Dean Paxton mocks them both. In a shop called House of Loco he meets Hugo Battersby, who once performed as Miss Loco Chanelle, before the AIDS epidemic took his drag family and his partner. Hugo offers to mentor Jamie and promises him Loco Chanelle's dress if he earns it. Jamie saves the money and plans to wear a dress to the school prom.
