Plot summary
Eugenie is a teenage girl. Madame Saint Ange invites her to the island for a weekend with her and her brother, and the invitation lures Eugenie there. She arrives on the island expecting a vacation in a paradise. Instead she is drawn into a dark world where pleasure, pain and murder are bound together, and into a series of disturbing sexual experiments staged by people a sinister figure controls. The experiments have a dream-like quality. The story adapts the Marquis de Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom, a book published in 1795, and moves the book's events into a present-day setting.
