Plot summary
In Spain, six-year-old Angela Gifford goes missing, and police find a girl's mutilated body in a manhole. The identification rests on a bracelet and a leg length discrepancy; the body also shows needle insertions and acid burns. Five years on, Claudia, Angela's mother and a local editor, lives alone, addicted to tranquilizers, while her possessive ex-boyfriend Toni stalks her. Then a desperate caller identifies herself as Angela and begs to be rescued. The voice resembles her daughter's and mentions a seaside place where Claudia used to take her. Claudia visits the spot and finds a deserted clinic nearby, decorated with angelic imagery, and an orthopedic boot apparently left for her. She turns to Massera, the discharged detective from the original investigation, who agrees to look into it again.
