Plot summary

Workmen have just bolted a new telephone booth into the square when a man puts his son on the school bus and steps inside to make a call. The door swings shut behind him and the telephone is dead. He pushes at the door and finds it jammed. Two businessmen on their way past grip the handle and pull, but nothing gives. A crowd gathers at the glass, and a repair man, a police officer and a strong man each take a turn at the door. The man inside keeps pushing at the glass and calling out to the people around him.
