Plot summary
Barky is 25 years old and has come back to Sydney to attend his father's funeral. Two years earlier he left home for the northern sugar cane growing areas to escape his father's violent rages. His father is dead now, and Barky thinks it is safe to return. His older brother Wace stayed behind, and their father's last years were left to him to manage. Wace is not happy that Barky was gone so long. Barky reaches Central station at dawn and asks after his brother, then walks the streets until he finds an old mate, Wayne, who tells him where Wace can be found.
