Plot summary
Alejandro lives in Santiago and works in the store of his father, Jaime. His Jewish family wants him to go to medical school, and he refuses. He chooses poetry instead. He makes puppets, and one of the people he meets through them gives him a studio to live in. In the city's bohemian circles he comes across poets and performers, some celebrated and some beginners, among them Nicanor Parra. After a mix-up over Stella Díaz Varín, who inspired his poem "The Viper", Alejandro offends Parra. The circles he joins belong to Santiago's Matucana neighborhood. The poet Enrique Lihn is his best friend.
