Alejandro Jodorowsky
Biography
Alejandro Jodorowsky is a Chilean-born filmmaker, writer, and theater director. Born in Iquique, he moved to Santiago in 1942 and worked as a circus clown and puppeteer before leaving for Paris in 1955 to study mime with Marcel Marceau. After working with Maurice Chevalier and making the short La cravate, he joined Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal to found the Panic Movement in 1962, writing books and plays while staging experimental theater in Paris and Mexico City. He created a comic strip called Fabulas Panicas and made his first feature, the surrealist Fando and Lis (1968), from an Arrabal play. El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973) attracted cult audiences, but his ambitious Dune adaptation collapsed when financiers withdrew. He later directed Tusk, Santa Sangre (1989), which drew critical acclaim, and The Rainbow Thief (1990) with Omar Sharif and Peter O'Toole, while continuing to produce comics and cartoons.
