Plot summary
Carmen is born in 1920s Andalusia on the day her mother, Carmen de Triana, dies and her father, the matador Antonio Villalta, is left paralyzed by a bull. Her grandmother Doña Concha raises her until her own death sends the girl into the household of Encarna, the nurse who married Antonio for his fame and money. Encarna keeps the paralyzed man hidden and treats his daughter badly. When Carmen flees into the woods, a traveling troupe of bullfighters with dwarfism finds her and carries her to their home. She remembers nothing of her past, not even her name, and the men call her Blancanieves for her fair looks. She joins their act and starts bullfighting herself.
