Plot summary
Mario Moreno lives out of a suitcase and takes odd jobs until a small stage company hires him as a janitor. Put on stage after failed turns as a boxer and a bullfighter, he is ridiculed for a dance in blackface, then clashes with a spectator over a shoe thrown at him, and the crowd applauds the way he talks himself out of trouble. Estanislao Shilinsky, who saw the act, brings him to Mexico City for comedy shows, where he meets the performer Valentina Ivanova. He keeps improvising lines that do not suit him and takes the name Cantinflas. In 1955, the Broadway producer Mike Todd, unable to pay the performers he wants for Around the World in 80 Days, travels to Mexico City and offers Moreno the script.
