Plot summary
Alejandro grows up in Tocopilla, on Chile's desert coast, with his parents. His father Jaime, a communist devoted to Stalin, wants a tough son and finds the boy cowardly and effeminate. His mother Sara sings instead of talking and is convinced that Alejandro is her own father reborn, because of the boy's long blonde hair. Jaime cuts that hair off, orders Alejandro to deny that God exists, and sets trials of self-control and bravery, among them a dental operation without anesthetic. Satisfied, Jaime says he respects his son and arranges for him to serve as mascot of the Tocopilla fire brigade.
