Plot summary
Elling is a man in his 40s who lives with anxiety, dizziness and neurotic tendencies. His mother has cared for him his whole life, and after her death the authorities move him into an institution. There he meets Kjell Bjarne, a simple-minded roommate of the same age who is obsessed with women. The state provides the two men with an apartment in Oslo, and they must prove they can get by in the outside world. A short errand for groceries is hard at first, and the social worker Frank Åsli helps them along.
