Plot summary
In 1949, Jacques-Yves Cousteau is an officer in the French Navy whose ambition was to fly. He quits the service to explore and film the ocean, sailing Calypso, a minesweeper built in 1941, with a crew he picks himself. He becomes an inventor as well, designing the autonomous regulator, and imagines civilizations living under the sea, a notion his backers do not share. Simone, his wife, stays aboard the Calypso through the year while he travels widely, and he is unfaithful to her. Philippe, his son, is an environmentalist and a filmmaker who works at his side, and the two clash. Cousteau shows the public the sea's hidden wonders and argues for protecting it.
