Peter Godfrey
Biography
Peter Godfrey was an English actor and film director. After early work in British repertory as a conjuror, clown, and director, he helped found the Gate Theatre Salon in 1925. The Gate Theatre Studio opened in London that October and, following Molière and Strindberg, gained attention in 1926 with Georg Kaiser's From Morn to Midnight, London's first expressionistic production. The company moved to Villiers Street in 1927 and peaked in the 1930 to 1931 season. Godfrey directed two British films early in the 1930s and staged C. L. R. James's Toussaint Louverture at the Westminster Theatre in 1936. He relocated to New York around 1937, then settled in Hollywood in 1939. He became a dialogue director at RKO and Columbia in 1942 and later directed films such as Cry Wolf and Escape Me Never, moving to television in the 1950s.
