Plot summary
George Khan, a Pakistani Muslim, has spent decades in Britain and today runs a fish-and-chip shop in Salford with Ella, his English wife of twenty-five years. Their seven children are Nazir, Abdul, Tariq, Maneer, Saleem, Meenah, and Sajid. George keeps a wife in Pakistan as well, and he worries for that first family, who are near the fighting in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He is set on arranging marriages for his children. The children, born and raised in Britain, consider themselves British, and they resist the Pakistani dress, food, religion, and culture he wants them to keep. Tariq, the most rebellious of the sons, is seeing Stella Moorhouse. Meenah is the only daughter and Sajid the youngest.
