Plot summary
Three strands of story cross the same desert country in antebellum Mexico. Pike and Henry are two fur traders, waiting to meet the Native American band that trades with them. A war party of Native Americans is returning to its village and rides against a second band whose leader keeps a magnificent white Arabian stallion. White Bull tries to capture it, but the stallion is too fast. A stagecoach takes a rich widow and the other passengers, among them a priest, toward her family's hacienda. Mexican soldiers are garrisoned in the country the travelers and the two traders pass through.
