Plot summary
In a blighted Los Angeles in 2009, Arthur Pratt is alone. His wife has died, and her illness has wiped out his savings; the couple's only son is long dead. After he buries his wife's ashes in a park, a duckling crosses his path, and Arthur takes the bird home, bathes and feeds it, and names it Joe. Falling behind on his rent, and with retirement housing that allows no pets, he is evicted from his apartment. Homeless, he goes back to the park with Joe.
