Plot summary

Cheb is sullen, abusive and disrespectful toward his wife, Anora Fleece, who once hoped for a fairy tale marriage and now takes comfort in daydreams. Her children, Tabby and Little Pete, treat her with similar disrespect. When Anora meets her neighbor Imogene Cochran, Little Pete reacts badly and calls Imogene a racial slur. Anora slaps him for it, and he threatens to tell his father, which he does at supper. Cheb smashes a beer bottle and threatens Anora. She hesitates to keep seeing Imogene but decides to go ahead. Tabby, meanwhile, has begun a relationship with a teenager named Denny, and her best friend Princess insists that Denny is trash.
