Plot summary
Seventeen and shy, Ben Marshall lives with his father Robert, a vicar occupied with birds, and his mother Laura, who carries out charitable works and directs the church pageant while paying little attention to what her family needs. She refuses to let him have a mobile phone or spend time with people his own age, and his driving lessons are spent chauffeuring her. Urged by his mother to earn summer money toward the care of Mr. Fincham, a patient she has taken on, Ben answers an advertisement placed by Evie Walton, an actress with classical training who, as her career declined, took a part on a daytime soap opera and has not worked since. Evie wants help in the house and someone to drive her to appointments, and she offers Ben the position.
