Plot summary
Wade and Ryan start high school and watch Terry Filkins and Ronnie force classmate Emmit into his locker. Wade steps in, and the bullies turn their attention on him and Ryan too; the three boys become friends. Other students keep out of it, and the principal takes no action, because Filkins, an emancipated minor, has parents in Hong Kong. After Filkins warns the boys against reporting him, Wade suggests the three find a bodyguard, and they post an ad on the Internet. A string of unsuitable applicants follows before they settle on Drillbit Taylor, a homeless man who presents himself as a martial arts expert and a mercenary and puts them through self-defense training.
