Dreams and Shadows (2009) on Netflix

Plot summary

Billy Brunette is a teenager who feels out of place in his own life. He spends his days at a local burger restaurant and goes home each night to his father, John, a paraplegic whose spirits have sunk into drinking. Billy tries to reach him, but the older man stays locked in disappointment and regret. The only place Billy feels free is his small bedroom, where he closes his eyes and imagines himself a brave warrior traveling through another world with his best friend, Sarah. When he decides to go after the man he holds responsible for his father's condition, hoping it will wake John up, the plan gives him something he has wanted for a long time: a purpose.
