Plot summary
Audrey is eighteen and lives in a remote community in the New Mexico desert with her father, Henry, who has not gone outside since her mother died. She longs for college, but the days go to his care and to that of her closest friend Calista, who wants to be Miss America and is living with multiple sclerosis. In the summer after graduation, Mookie and his mother Mary, along with Mary's fiancé Herb, move into the house next door. Calista wants romance, so Audrey urges Mookie to ask her out, and the pair become a couple. Audrey, meanwhile, finds her own feelings for Mookie taking hold, and being the dependable person her father and Calista rely on gets harder.
