Plot summary
A band of mages has seized a girl for a ritual, and the Seekers move against them. Cassandra, young and quick to anger, fells a dragon in the fight, though the mages' leader gets away. Byron, the Seeker who has guided her, urges her to master her fury, then takes charge of the girl himself and speaks of a possible conspiracy. Rogue mages ambush them and seize the girl again. In the forest Cassandra meets Regalyan, a mage who claims Byron sent him to bring the girl to safety. She distrusts all mages, but after the other Seekers turn on them and he heals her wounds, she softens, and a charge of treason hangs over her.
