Plot summary
Gordon lays out his plan at the kitchen table for his teenage son Luke and a hand-held camera: to walk Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, 192 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. His wife calls the trip an excuse for one long drinking session. Gordon then gathers best friend Keith, who hopes the trail will lighten his burdened mind, along with old school friends Steve, an under-prepared school teacher, and Julian, a troublesome wild card. The four have not caught up in decades, and each carries his own mid-life troubles: money worries, secrets kept, a shaken sense of who he is, addiction, disillusionment. Julian mocks Gordon's careful plans as the group sets out.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Downhill (2014)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Filming took place in June 2012, at that time the wettest June on record; the crew had decided to shoot in sequence and keep as close to the Coast-to-Coast Walk route as possible, traveling west to east, so the extreme weather created havoc with the schedule.
- Downhill grew from a seed idea the producer, Benji Howell, had been working on, built around “a road movie on foot”; he wanted a film uncompromised by industry demands such as name actors for lead roles, so it had to be an idea that could be shot on a very low budget.
- The small independent comedy reached number one on the iTunes Independent Film chart and number six on the overall iTunes charts during its release week.
- Screenwriter Torben Betts, a former actor, wrote himself into the film with a cameo as a character called The Helpful Walker.
