Plot summary
Dave Whiteman owns Dav-Bar, a company that manufactures wire garment hangers, and lives in Beverly Hills with his wife, Barbara. Twenty years of marriage have left the couple unhappy and no longer sleeping together. Dave is involved with Carmen, the household's live-in maid, and Barbara, who hired her, spends her time shopping and trying New Age therapies. Their son Max speaks to his parents mostly through his avant-garde videos, and Dave believes his nineteen-year-old daughter Jenny is anorexic. Even the family dog, Matisse, is badly adjusted. Jerry Baskin, homeless and grieving for his own lost dog, walks into the Whitemans' pool trying to drown himself. Dave pulls him out and offers him a few days to recuperate, drawn in by Jerry's stories of past wealth and success.
