Plot summary
Alice and Jack Chambers live in Victory, a company town in the California desert built around the top-secret project the husbands leave for each morning. Their wives pass the days in leisure while the men are away. Alice spends her time with the other wives, including her closest friend, Bunny. Margaret, another resident, has pulled away from the community; after an unauthorized trip into the desert she insists Victory took her son as punishment. At a party given by Frank, the town's founder, Alice sees Margaret's husband try to medicate her. From the trolley Alice watches a plane go down in the desert and runs to help. She stumbles onto Headquarters, touches a mirror-like window, and is overcome by visions of another life.

- It was reported that Olivia Wilde fired Shia LaBeouf from the film for poor behavior and clashing with the cast and crew; LaBeouf denied it in August 2022, saying he quit despite Wilde's efforts to keep him on board.
- Olivia Wilde was originally set to play the part that went to Florence Pugh, and Pugh was set to play Wilde's role, but the two traded roles when Wilde decided she wanted a younger couple at the center of the film.
