Plot summary
Phoenix is eleven years old and lives in a Detroit suburb with Norman Nordstrom, the blind Navy SEAL veteran who took her in after a house fire orphaned her, and his rottweiler Shadow. Norman has told her that her birth mother died in that fire, in their old house. Hernandez, an Army Ranger and Norman's only connection with society, persuades him to let the girl ride along on an errand in town, and Phoenix visits the burnt-down house. A gangster named Raylan tries to abduct her there, and Shadow drives him off. Raylan's crew trails Hernandez's van back to Norman's and waits for the girl to be dropped off.
