Plot summary
Three years after Winter was rescued, Sawyer Nelson works at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and trains its volunteers. The staff take in a sunburned dolphin found stranded on a beach, named Mandy for the girl who spotted her, and nurse her back to health. Winter shares her pool with Panama, an elderly dolphin, and shows signs of stress. After Panama dies, a USDA inspector rules that Winter cannot be kept alone and gives the aquarium thirty days to match her with another female dolphin. Meanwhile, a professor offers Sawyer a place in a three-month research program at sea, a scholarship his family welcomes and he hesitates to accept because it would take him away from Winter.
